The McKinney family has lived in The Bahamas for generations. At 17 Doon was teaching school in a remote village in Botswana. She fell in love with the idea of living in a Round House. When she returned to The Bahamas she decided to move from Nassau to the remote and untouched island of Eleuthera and build her own round house. Everyone was a bit skeptical of this young woman clearing the land by herself and building a house with no electricity, running water, car or a telephone.
Camping out every night on the site helped her develop an intense connection with the land and gave her the opportunity to build a house that was perfect for the location. She decided to build 11-foot arches on all five sides of the house to allow the ocean breeze to sweep into the house. She nestled the house among coconut trees and Casuarina trees where you can hear the sound of the wind in the trees and the waves on the beach. She surrounded the house with a garden full of beautiful hibiscus, oleander, seagrape, coconuts and, other native flowers and trees.
It was a challenge for a woman with limited carpentry skills to clear the land and almost single-handedly build a house- having never built so much as a box. Doon persevered and used creativity to overcome many of the obstacles she encountered. While still working on the building of the house Doon married and had 2 daughters (Casuarina and Taja)- the youngest was born right in the Round House before the midwife even found her way out to the house.

Eleuthera’s a long, thin island – 110 miles long but, at its widest, only 2 miles across. It’s blessed with an abundance of spectacular beaches and perpetuatal summer – winter highs are in the mid 70’s, summer highs in the mid to upper 80’s.
Generally, Eleuthera is 3-4 degrees cooler than Florida, with constant sea breezes. Eleuthera is unusual in that it is relatively hilly, reaching an elevation of 100 feet, much more than most of the other Bahamian islands.
With a population of about 8,000, Eleuthera, unlike Nassau, does not have “big city” feel. Bahamians are known to be some of the warmest and most friendly anywhere. Governor’s Harbour, the capital, is located at the mid-point of the island and has small town charm and is a great jumping off point for exploring both north and south Eleuthera. The island is a nature lovers paradise.

I am looking back on our wonderful week in Eleuthera and it feels like the most amazing dream! Doon was an incredible hostess, always available via Whatsapp.
The beach was just steps away. We went there with our coffee every morning to watch the sunrise. And of course went swimming during the day as well. We were very lucky with the full moon and went walking at night down the beach. Two unbelievable beaches were within walking distance, French Leave and Twin Coves. We also loved Governor's Harbour. Our favorite restaurant there was the Buccaneer. We also enjoyed the restaurant at the French Leave resort. We did explore some of the island but every time we came back, we wondered why we just didn't stay put! The Sunset apartment fit our needs perfectly! We had everything we needed plus a comfortable bed and lovely shower. But next time we hope to rent the big house for our all whole family because we will be back! Thank you Doon and Taja for your amazing hospitality!

“Beautiful on the beach location straight out of a movie. The house is on the beach and the amenities are great. It is away from all the hustle and peaceful get away location. You have your own private cabana on the beach at no additional cost. You will encounter a great host who is always readily available.”

My girlfriend and I had a great week at the Sunset Apartment. The location is a beach lovers dream. Everything was exactly as described in the listing. There's lots to do on Eleuthera but I personally enjoyed the diving right in front of the property more than anything. Nothing beats fresh lobster pulled from the sea! You don't have to swim too far off shore to get them and the water is quite shallow, you just have to know where the little bugs hide :-). I saw several large green sea turtles out there while diving and also was surprised to see a rather large spotted eagle ray swim by one afternoon while I was out. Another favorite activity was the 3 mile round trip walk from the beach in front of the property South to the rocky point beyond the old Club Med. The beach is amazing and we never got tired of soaking up the sun while beach-combing along that beautiful stretch of pink sand. You can get to many other beaches that are close by but you will definitely need a car. I suggest renting one so you can explore the island and discover new places. You don't have to look very hard to locate more beautiful beaches with no one on them! If you like to feel like you are on Giligan's Island and want to stay by yourself at the apartment/property you can do that as well as it is pretty secluded and a great place to unwind and escape tourist mobs which there are basically none of on Eleuthera anyway. Another cool place to check out that is 10 minutes from the apartment is the Leon Levy native plant preserve which is a great hike on manicured paths through the jungle! Being 5 minutes (by car) away from Governors Harbor is a bonus, plenty of markets to get supplies, some good places to eat meals out and a few shops to buy souvenirs.

This apartment’s location was incredible – the most beautiful beaches were just a few steps away. It was a quiet location, with only a few people around. The kitchen is a screened in porch, which was nice for the breezes during the day. The bedroom and bathroom were open concept. The people were very friendly and Doon was a great host.

Incredible location on one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen that was pretty much empty! We felt like our front yard was a private beach.
